Apparently, black people can’t even garden in peace anymore.
Marc Peeples was dedicated to making a more habitable environment for his Detroit neighborhood when he was unexpectedly arrested. The reason? Police got calls of disturbances from white women.Ā
According to the Detroit Metro Times, Deborah Nash, Martha Callahan, and Jennifer Morris didn’t take a liking to Peebles’ mission to revamp Hunt Park with an urban garden. When his work began in 2017, the women reported claims of “illegal gardening” to cops. When the tactic was ignored, more serious measures came into play.Ā
The innocent citizen dealt with their harassment in the form of other allegations, including being accused of threatening Nash with a gun to being involved in a drive-by shooting for a year. However, the nail in his coffin was the disgusting accusation of pedophilia, all because he was gardening with the help of local children. Eventually, Detroit PD charged Peeples with three counts of stalking.Ā
Though the charges ended up getting dropped, that wasn’t enough compared to the relentless effort to tarnish Peebles’ name. District Court Judge E. Lynise Bryant clearly agreed,Ā saying the women, who lied under oath, “should be sitting at the defendantās table for stalking and harassment charges, not Mr. Peeples.ā
When there was no investigation into the women to face action for their lies, Peeples took matters into his own hands. Now, he and his lawyer, Robert Burton-Harris, are set to take them to court for $300,000 in damages. Burton Harris explained the target argument is the revelation that the three women wanted Peebles out of the way so they could use the land area for themselves.
āAt all times, Deborah, Martha, and Jennifer, collectively and individually, acted with the ulterior purpose of obtaining control over Hunt Park. They made false police reports and accused Marc of various crimes that they knew he did not commit.ā
But if these women thought dragging Peeples through the court system would drain him, they’re sadly mistaken. The Detroit native has no plans to cease his work of beautifying his town. The garden, named Liberated Farms, is joint with the STEM system for local schools and will soon be accompanied by brand new playground equipment.
