Friday, new data revealed that more black residents in New York City are dying from coronavirus than any other race. Outlets have described this statistic as “a devastating impact.”
According to the data, in the five boroughs that make up NYC, 1,999 deaths related to COVID-19 have occurred amongst black or African-American people.
The Daily Mail wrote, “this means their deaths make up a third (33.2%) of the city’s total death toll, despite accounting for just 22% of the city’s population.
Fear has been arising in black communities throughout the US as state officials and lawmakers “warn the outbreak is hitting African Americans the hardest, highlighting the systematic racial inequality that continues to exist.”
Oprah Winfrey, who spoke on the impact the virus has had on the black community, warns that the virus is “taking us out.”
Black residents are also more than twice as likely as white people to have a non-fatal hospitalization.
Fatalities among Hispanic or Latino people were the second-highest—1,696 deaths. The third-most affected group were white people with a death toll of 1,861. Asian people were the least affected, with 463 deaths.
