A Brazilian anesthetist was arrested this week after he was caught on tape raping a sedated pregnant woman undergoing a C-section.
Police arrested Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32, on July 10 after nurses became suspicious of his behavior after he administered higher doses of anesthesia to patients during two C-sections that day. The nurses decided to set up a hidden camera during the third procedure — and that’s when they caught him doing the unthinkable.
Bezerra was recorded placing his penis in the heavily sedated pregnant woman’s mouth.
While surgeons worked to deliver the baby, Bezerra could be seen positioning himself next to the woman’s head with his apron arranged in a way that his colleagues could not see the woman from her neck up. He is said to have raped the woman for 10 minutes and would intimidate staff who tried to get close.
And now, authorities say three additional women have come forward accusing the man of similar attacks–bringing the total to at least six women.
During a Tuesday court appearance, a judge sentenced Bezerra to indefinite detention in solitary confinement at a maximum security jail while his case is being investigated.
It has also been revealed that Bezerra is facing separate legal issues. Prior to qualifying as an anesthetist, he was named in a medical malpractice lawsuit from 2018.
While working at a different hospital, Bezerra and another doctor were accused of misdiagnosing a case of swine flu as a urinary tract infection, causing the patient to go into a 23-day coma where she ended up losing her big toe and large amounts of hair, in addition to sustaining severe damage to her Achilles tendon.
Bezerra qualified as an anesthetist just this April and is now being accused of using his role to take advantage of women.
