Canada Plans To Build the World’s Largest Geothermal Lagoon, Will Be Heated Year-Round

Canada is on to something big! I’m talking 130,000 square feet big. The country is joining Iceland in offering its own geothermal lagoon.

Developers want to build the world’s largest geothermal lagoon in Canada, News Atlas reported. The plan is for the man-made body of water to have a spa village as a centerpiece made up of hundreds of chalets.

The development will be called geoLagon, located in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. It will reportedly be 130,000 square feet, which is 37,000 square feet bigger than Iceland’s Blue Lagoon. Water will be kept at 102 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, which will be a hit during the winter when temperatures are regularly below freezing at night.

The geoLagoon will be heated by a “huge Thermos” heating system. The setup will use geothermal, biomass, photovoltaic, and solar systems to generate heat, which will then be stored in a thermal reservoir under the lagoon, according to the Robb Report.

It is also possible the system will be able to provide energy to surrounding areas. Still, at the very least, it will make the project entirely energy self-sufficient.

“This is one of the keys to our recipe,” geoLagon CEO Louis Massicotte told the website. “I have a patent pending on this huge Thermos under our pool.”

Clusters of solar-powered cottages will surround the lagoon. The project’s developers want geoLagon to become a tourist destination, ideal since the chalets will be available for short-term rentals. Investors have already spoken for nearly 80 percent of them. While the man-made lagoon should be enough for people to want to visit, the attraction will be located less than an hour north of Quebec City, which lures people in with its vibrant cultural scene.

Construction of geoLagon will be done in three phases. The first is scheduled to begin in March of next year. Initially, half the cottages will be built, and then the lagoon will be constructed, and then the rest of the cottages.

The project should take about 18 months to complete.
