The sudden death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student at Delta State University in Mississippi, has left his family and community demanding answers.
Reed was found hanging from a tree on campus on September 15. Authorities quickly ruled the case a suicide, saying the autopsy showed no signs of assault, broken bones, or visible injuries. Toxicology results are still pending, and officials turned over investigative materials to federal authorities for review.
But Reed’s family isn’t convinced. They’ve pointed out conflicting details, including initial claims that Trey was discovered in his dorm room before later learning he was found outside. They say information has been inconsistent and that too much is being revealed through the media instead of directly to them.
That’s where Colin Kaepernick stepped in. Through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, he is covering the cost of an independent autopsy so the family can get clarity beyond the state’s findings. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is also representing the family, emphasizing their right to transparency.
While the state medical examiner has officially ruled Reed’s death a suicide by hanging, his family continues to push for more answers, especially as the community raises questions about accountability and justice.
