The Justice Department is facing scrutiny after dozens of Jeffrey Epstein-related files vanished from its public website just one day after being released.

Among the files removed were images linked to Donald Trump, sparking concerns over how the DOJ is handling sensitive information.

According to The Associated Press, at least 16 files that were publicly accessible on Friday were no longer available as of Saturday.

Officials from the DOJ have yet to explain why the files were pulled. In a statement on social media, the department said, “Photos and other materials will continue being reviewed and redacted consistent with the law in an abundance of caution as we receive additional information.” The agency previously told the public to report any posted content containing private or sensitive information, promising to correct issues “as soon as possible.”

Whether this protocol prompted the recent removals has not been confirmed.

Attorney Gloria Allred shared that her team had contacted the DOJ after being alerted by individuals who noticed personal information in the files.

Allred told The Hill, “I can’t reveal where the names appeared, but we were told that the names will be redacted.” Her statement implies that the missing files may have included unredacted names of people connected to the Epstein investigation.

The removed content included images of artwork and photographs of a desk with open drawers.

Notably, one image of the desk contained two photos of Trump. One showed him with a group of women in swimsuits, while the other, partially obscured, included Trump alongside Melania Trump, Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell in the year 2000.

Members of the House Oversight Committee took notice, demanding transparency and asking whether the DOJ was intentionally withholding information from the public.

Friday’s initial release of Epstein’s files included heavily redacted images showing Epstein with high-profile figures such as former President Bill Clinton, actors Kevin Spacey and Chris Tucker, musicians Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross, and even journalist Walter Cronkite. The limited new information and extensive redactions drew widespread criticism.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky criticized the DOJ for failing to meet the requirements of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which he sponsored. The law requires the agency to release all files within 30 days while only redacting the names of victims or those under investigation.

Massie pointed out discrepancies between the language of the law and the DOJ’s recent letter to Congress, which claimed the agency could withhold certain materials under privilege. Massie commented on social media, “THEY ARE FLAUNTING LAW.”

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the DOJ plans to continue releasing additional files over the next few weeks. He explained that the delays are related to carefully redacting witness names and other personal identifiers. The department intends to ensure sensitive information is protected while still providing access to the public.

The sudden removal of documents has left lawmakers and the public asking tough questions about transparency and the extent to which the DOJ is following the law.

With missing files and heavily redacted content, the controversy surrounding the Epstein document release is far from over.
