Lupita Nyong’o has not only made her mark in the modeling and film industry, but in Harlem too. On Tuesday, October 20th, the New York Congressman Charles Rangel and Harlem Arts Alliance Chairman Voca Rivers declared October 20th as Lupita Nyong’o Day in Harlem, NY.
The ceremony took place at a nearby restaurant in Harlem, and Lupita was definitely in attendance for the joyous occasion. The 32-year-old Oscar winner also posted an Instagram video of the heartfelt moment. “My heart is swollen with the love and welcome I just received from the Harlem community” Lupita wrote on the Instagram post.
According to The Harlem Arts Alliance Chairman, Voza Rivers, Nyong’o embodies both the African and American spirits and culture of Harlem. Rivers also stated that Nyong’o’s influence on the African-American community is very commendable. The city of Harlem was proud to grant Nyong’o the amazing honor.
