Now that Ray Rice is allowed to make his way back to the NFL, Janay Rice is on a press run. After talking to ESPN last week, she sat down with TODAY’s Matt Lauer in a two part interview about the details of the events leading to Ray Rice’s suspension.
“I was furious,” Janay Rice told Lauer about her emotions directly after Ray Rice knocked her out in a casino elevator. “We came home and we didn’t talk the entire ride. Well, I didn’t speak to him the entire ride home. He tried to talk to me. I didn’t want to hear any of it. I just knew he hit me, and I was completely over it. I was done… I just didn’t even want to entertain it – any explanation. Of course in the back of my mind and in my heart I knew that our relationship wouldn’t be over because I know that this isn’t us, and it’s not him.” She goes on to say that this was the first time Ray had ever put hands on her and he hadn’t done so since.
Janay says that she felt the Baltimore Ravens, whom she considered their support system, failed them even though Ray Rice was completely upfront about the incident in February. According to Janay, she feels that the Ravens and NFL did what they did to Ray to protect themselves. “I feel like if they wanted to know more details then they would have asked. But there were no further questions. It’s been consistent with everything that he’s been saying since February,” she told TODAY.
After Friday’s decision Ray Rice issued a statement saying, “I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions … I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes.”
