Kelly Rowland had to check the American Music Awards audience while announcing Chris Brown as the winner of an award Sunday night.
The former Destiny’s Child member took the stage to reveal the Favorite Male R&B Artist winner. Chris Brown was nominated along with The Weeknd, Brent Faiyaz, Giveon, and Lucky Daye.
“Now, Chris Brown is not here tonight, so I’m accepting this award on his behalf,” Rowland said, addressing the crowd. “Excuse me…chill out.”
Rowland continued: “But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music, and I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer. I’ll take this award—bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
It was previously reported that Brown was set to perform at the AMAs for the Michael Jackson tribute but was later canceled last minute.
