Kyrie Irving posted a statement today in response to a $25,000 fine from the NBA for failing to meet his preseason media obligations quota.

The Brooklyn Nets Point guard posted a statement in a slide on his Instagram Story along with a quote from legendary activist Malcolm X.

“I’ve had enough of someone else’s propaganda… I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole,” he wrote.

Irving then added his own sentiments, “I pray that we utilize the ‘fine money’ for the marginalized communities in need,” he wrote.

Kyrie urged the media to stop distracting him and his team, saying he is here for “Peace and Greatness.” Before ending his statement by saying, “We move different over here,” Irving said. “…I do not talk to pawns. My attention is worth more.”

During “normal times,” each team was required to have a set media day, where the teams, including front office personnel, coaches, and players, address the media and discuss the upcoming season. Due to COVID-19, the NBA changed to a media week in an effort to social distance. Everything was spread out and taking place virtually via videoconferencing.

Players were expected to be available to answer questions at some point, even if they didn’t attend in person. Irving declined, choosing instead to issue a statement, which resulted in $25,000 fines for Irving and the Nets team.
