After agreeing on a new one-year contract, Seven-Time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton will continue to race for Mercedes in the 2021 season.
For its ninth season, the contract would see Hamilton partner with Mercedes and bring an end to months of uncertainty about Briton’s future in the sport.
Since joining Mercedes from McLaren in 2013, Hamilton has dominated the F1 landscape, winning 74 races and six drivers’ championships.
Hamilton hit the level of Michael Schumacher’s seven world titles in the 2020 season and broke the German all-time winning record of 91 races.
Hamilton was also a leading figure promoting the cause of Black Lives Matter and called for the F1 paddock to do more to counter diversity and inclusion issues. In the hopes of making “real, tangible and measurable change,” he set up a commission in his name to improve diversity in motorsport.
Mercedes said the new deal would include a “joint commitment for greater diversity and inclusion.”
Hamilton said, “I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes teammates.”
“I’m equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations, and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue,” he explained. “I’m proud to say we are taking that effort further this year by launching a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the sport. I am inspired by all that we can build together and can’t wait to get back on the track in March.”
