As Mariah Carey‘s upcoming memoir slowly approaches, the American singer and songwriter is sharing a few details about her life with the media.
While discussing her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, during an interview with Vulture, the multi-Grammy Award-winning artist gave the inside scoop on her past romance with former professional baseball player Derek Jeter.
The 50-year-old admitted to the outlet that Jeter inspired two of her 1997 classic tracks.
Mariah mentioned that “The Roof” from her Butterfly album is about her first kiss with Jeter on his apartment building’s rooftop.
“I can never forget that moment … It was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way,” Mariah said.
She also confessed that another song from the same album, “My All,” is about her old lover. Mariah said the song was about her risking her life to spend a night with the pro athlete.
According to PEOPLE, the new book revealed that the steamy fling occurred while the star was still married to music executive Tommy Mottola. It all started when Mariah met the then Yankee player at a dinner party, which led to them discretely texting.
Although Mariah was still tied to a marriage with Mottola, her love affair with Jeter started toward the end of the singer’s rocky marriage.
In the Vulture interview, Mariah compared her home with her ex-husband to New York prison, Sing Sing.
She said her fling with Jeter helped her “get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.”
Mariah went on to divorce Mottola in 1998.
