A labeling error has triggered a recall for a popular potato chip flavor after officials warned it could pose a serious health risk for people with certain food allergies. Frito-Lay announced a voluntary recall involving select 8-ounce bags of Miss Vickie’s Spicy Dill Pickle Potato Chips because the packages may contain an undeclared milk allergen. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published an alert about the issue on March 4, one day after the company publicly disclosed the recall.
According to the notice, some bags labeled as the spicy dill pickle flavor may actually include jalapeño-flavored potato chips. Since the jalapeño variety contains milk, the allergen would not appear on the ingredient label of the recalled bags.
The company explained that the mistake could create a health risk for consumers with dairy allergies. In the recall statement, Frito-Lay warned the product could cause “serious or life-threatening allergic reactions” in “those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk.” The chips are considered safe for anyone who does not have a milk allergy.
The affected bags may have been available for purchase as early as January 15. Distribution was limited to six states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Retail locations included grocery stores, convenience stores, drug stores, and local online retailers operating in those areas.
Customers can confirm whether their chips are part of the recall by checking for the UPC code 0 28400761772 printed on the back of the bag. The packaging will also list a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of April 21, 2026, along with one of two manufacturing codes: 38U301414 or 48U101514.
Frito-Lay said the issue was discovered after a consumer reached out to report a potential problem. PepsiCo, the brand’s parent company, also stated that “no allergic reactions related to this matter have been reported to date.”
No other Miss Vickie’s products are included in the recall, including Spicy Dill Pickle chips packaged in variety packs. Consumers seeking more information can contact customer service at 1-877-984-2543.
