Last month, 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes was shot and killed in the backseat of her mother, LaPorsha Washington’s, vehicle by a random white man as they sat at a traffic signal. The Texas family is still grieving the loss and Washington is finally speaking out.
According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is described as a bearded white male in his 40s who drives a red or maroon truck. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, “It’s our belief that it was totally unprovoked, whatever it was, and we’re leaving no stone unturned. We’re going to leave every motive out there as a possibility.” He continued, “There was nothing to indicate that the family did anything wrong in any way. They were simply just driving along the service road when this happened to them. We’re very committed and we’re not going to let up. We’re extremely upset by this.”
Washington recalled the terrifying events in statements to #CNN. She told reporters the family had gotten up early because her mother, who was visiting, usually wakes them up early for breakfast and they were also preparing for Sunday dinner. They were simply on a coffee run to a convenience store, still in their pajamas, when the man pulled up beside them and opened fire. She said, “I made a stop at a red light and kept going, and gunshots were fired in my car.” She continued, “It was not fair. He intentionally killed my child for no reason. He didn’t even know her. He didn’t even know who she was.”
Washington recalled the truck speeding up to get in front of them and the gunman continued to fire. She stated, “The shots came through my window. It broke my glass. I don’t even know how my baby got shot…I turn around and my 7-year-old was shot in the head.” Her vehicle didn’t have tinted windows so she believes the gunman could see “it was a mother, a black mother with four beautiful children, girls, in this car.”
The suspect is still at large and the family and police are desperately seeking information on his whereabouts.
Many prayers for Jazmine Barnes’ family ??
