On Tuesday, law enforcement agencies throughout the area responded to an active shooting incident in Jersey City, New Jersey.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the shootout occurred shortly after an incident at a nearby cemetery, where police were reportedly investigating a homicide. However, upon further investigation, the suspects reportedly fled to the nearby bodega, where the shootout began.
At the grocery store, gunshots rang out every 15 minutes, as part of a nearly two-hour-long standoff. Dozens of emergency vehicles swarmed the area as officials returned fire.
As a result of the incident, one police officer has been shot dead, while two others are in stable condition. Two suspects connected to the case are dead as well as three civilians, with several others injured.
At this time, Jersey City Schools are on lockdown, however “all students are safe” according to the school district’s Facebook page.
Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement, “I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Jersey City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and school children currently under lockdown.”
The shooting took place near Martin Luther King Drive.
