When Netflix dropped “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” it ignited a full‑on legal war. On December 1, lawyers for Diddy fired off a cease‑and‑desist letter that called the project a “hit piece,” accusing the streamer of airing “stolen footage” and using the series as “corporate retribution.”
In response, Netflix didn’t back down. A spokesperson spoke exclusively to Complex, stating that the claims are false. The company affirmed that the footage, including video from the days prior to Combs’ 2024 arrest, was legally obtained and that no participants were paid to appear.
Combs’ team had argued that the involvement of 50 Cent, a longtime adversary, along with streaming‑house co‑CEO Ted Sarandos, indicated the series was meant to punish rather than document. They claim Netflix originally pitched its own doc to Combs in 2023, which was rejected, then later handed the project to 50 Cent to produce a biased series.
Netflix counters that the series has no connection to past outreach to Combs, and that creative control, while credited to 50 Cent, was not in his hands alone. The streamer also defended its sourcing of footage and interviews. Director Alexandria Stapleton maintains that all material was legally cleared for use.
