Nev Schulman is counting his blessings after a bike accident that nearly left him paralyzed—or worse.
The 39-year-old Catfish host revealed that last Monday, while biking to pick up his son from school, disaster struck. “I never made it to pick up my son from school on the bike. In some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone on impact. Just me, the truck, and then the pavement. I was alone and unconscious,” Nev recounted.
After the accident, Nev was rushed to a hospital in Southampton, New York, where doctors quickly diagnosed him with a broken neck. The situation was dire, with initial concerns about potential paralysis. “Stable fractures. I’m not paralyzed. My hands were a question mark there for a minute, but the human body is incredible and so are HUMANS,” Nev shared.
Nev posted photos showing hospital staff helping him recover, including a physical therapist assisting him out of bed as he worked to regain his ability to walk. In one photo, Nev is seen wearing a neck brace, highlighting just how serious the situation was. He also underwent surgery, leaving him with a purple scar on the back of his neck as a reminder of the ordeal.
The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of wearing a helmet. Nev shared a video of his shattered bike helmet, emphasizing that without it, he might not have survived.
Throughout his recovery, Nev received plenty of support from his family. His three kids—7-year-old Cleo James, 5-year-old Beau Bobby Bruce, and 2-year-old Cy Monroe—created drawings to show their love and encouragement.
“I’m lucky to be here, alive, standing, and hugging my family, projected to make a full recovery,” Nev said, reflecting on his ordeal. “I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude. For the big and little things before the accident, and now everything moving forward.”
As Nev put it, “Life can change in an instant.”
