The NFL is pushing for a lengthy suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
According to the Washington Post, the NFL believes Watson deserves a “significant” suspension. The quarterback is currently facing 24 civil lawsuits that include allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to sexual assault. Even though Watson’s cases aren’t criminal, he can still be punished by the league for violating the personal conduct policy.
A representative from Watson’s camp says the NFL will “probably” argue that Watson should be suspended for one entire season. However, the rep did not specify the exact length but said the NFL will say the time needs to be “significant.”
Although it’s unclear when the decision will be made, the NFL is asking to have the entire process completed by the start of training camp. The Browns’ training camp is set to begin on July 27th. That said, Watson will most likely know his fate sometime during the next six weeks.
Earlier this week, Watson spoke out for the first time on the situation since March. He continued to state his innocence.
“I’ve been honest, and I’ve been truthful,” Watson said. “I never forced anyone; I never assaulted anyone. I’ve been saying it from the beginning, and I’m gonna continue to do that until all the facts come out.”
Watson is currently facing 24 lawsuits that could move up to 26. Earlier this week, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said two more lawsuits would likely be filed soon. The extra suits could complicate things a little more for Watson. The NFL could add a stipulation to any potential punishments. This will allow the league to impose additional discipline if any more lawsuits get filed after the original discipline is handed out.
