Whew, chillay #BlackGirlMagic is truly unstoppable. Olympic sprinter #AllysonFelix has just beat #UsainBolt’s world record.
On Sunday, right after winning her 12th gold medal at the World Championships on the mixed-gender 4x400m relay team, USA Olympic sprinter Allyson Felix broke Bolt’s record. She is holds the record for the most gold medals at the track and field World Championships.
Felix is a woman of many accolades, as she has won a combined nine medals between each of her four Olympic games. Six of the medals are gold. In response to headlines announcing the news, she simply stated that she was “humbled.” And let’s not forget to mention that Felix just gave birth 10 months ago?
While this is her first season as a mother, Felix isn’t new to facing a challenge when competing. Back in November 2018, Felix battled preeclampsia and underwent an emergency C-section at 32 weeks to deliver her daughter. The Olympian talked to ESPN about her struggle with keeping up her image after pregnancy, saying she feared that she would have to let go of her plans.
“If I come back and I’m just not the same, if I can’t make a fifth Olympic team, I’m gonna know that I fought, that I was determined, and that I gave it my absolute all. And if it doesn’t end up the way I imagined in my head, it’ll be OK. I just have to go for it, because that’s just simply who we are now.” Felix was also a part of the movement that urged Nike to change its long-standing maternity policies for its sponsored athletes. Felix was able to get Nike to amend its policies which now ensures female athletes won’t be “adversely impacted financially for pregnancy” for 18 months, which is six months more than under the previous policy.
