Patrick Beverley’s attorney is speaking out following the former NBA player’s arrest in Texas on a felony assault charge. Letitia Quinones-Hollins issued a strong defense, claiming the 37-year-old was not violent and acted only out of concern for his younger sister.
“Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night,” Quinones-Hollins said in a statement to TMZ Sports. “In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same. He has always looked out for their well-being and will continue to do so.”
Beverley was arrested last week and charged with Assault on a Family Member/Household Member, Impeding Breath or Circulation. He was released after posting $40,000 bond.
According to police, the arrest followed an incident where Beverley allegedly found his teenage sister at home alone with an 18-year-old man late at night. “He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor,” his attorney added. “We don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described.”
The probable cause affidavit includes troubling allegations. Beverley’s sister claims he grabbed her by the neck, lifted her off the ground, and held her in a chokehold for 20 to 30 seconds. She also alleges he slammed her against walls, punched her in the eye, and said he would be “the family relative to kill her.” Officers reported visible injuries consistent with her claims.
