Plus-Size Influencer Petitions For Free Seats And Other Accommodations From Airlines

Jaelynn Chaney

A plus-size creator who gained notoriety for advice for plus-sized travelers has started a Change.org petition with a list of accommodations she believes the Federal Aviation Authority should provide.

Jaelynn Chaney of Vancouver, Washington, says in the petition that “air travel should be comfortable and accessible for everyone, regardless of size.” The influencer details the uncomfortable experiences she and her fiancee experienced on different flights.

“During a flight from Pasco to Denver, my fiancé was subjected to hateful comments, disapproving looks, and even refusal to sit next to them, amounting to discrimination,” Chaney explained. “Similarly, on another flight, I was forced to occupy only one seat with immovable armrests that caused me pain and bruises.”

She outlines the steps she would like the FAA to take to ensure plus-size travelers are accommodated on flights, including employee training. Additionally, she wants to see new planes outfitted with at least one wheelchair-accessible bathroom, policies and procedures for larger travelers, and airport accommodations.

One of Chaney’s most significant asks is that plus-sized travelers should receive additional seats at no extra cost.

“All plus-size passengers should be provided with an extra free seat, or even two or three seats depending on their size, to accommodate their needs and ensure their comfort during the flight,” she wrote.

And if a plus-size passenger purchased extra seats, they should be entitled to a refund. Chaney says receiving money back should be a simple process that can be completed online or through the airline’s customer service.

The FAA currently has no seat size requirements. The average economy seat is 17 inches wide with 30 to 31 inches of legroom when the seat is reclined, according to Reuters. In 2018, the FAA said it had no plans to regulate seat size.

As of Sunday, the petition had exceeded its goal of 5,000 signatures, with 5,125 people signing. A new goal of 7,500 has been set.
