California authorities confirmed a 25-year-old woman was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting as she was on her way to a birthday party.
The family of the victim, Marissa Perez, says she was targeted.
Perez was riding as a passenger in her father’s car to pick up a cake for her aunt’s party when another car pulled up beside the vehicle and opened fire around 7:30 p.m. last Thursday. The incident happened in the Los Angeles suburb of Artesia, ABC7 News reported.
She was due to give birth in June.
Sandra Tolentino said her daughter was shot multiple times, including once in the head.
She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Her unborn baby did not survive, the New York Post reported.
“She was 25. She was about to be a mother in five more months. She was so happy,” said Tolentino. “I want justice for my daughter. I want justice for my grandbaby.”
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also believe the drive-by shooting that took the victim’s life was targeted but have not released a motive.
