Two of R. Kelly’s attorneys are fed up with his lengthy court battle and have filed to withdraw from his case.
Michael Leonard and Steve Greenberg no longer want to be involved with the singer’s Chicago sex crimes case. The request for withdrawal was filed on Friday and comes seven months before the trial is slated to begin. The reasoning behind the filing has not been made public.
In June, both attorneys requested to be removed from Kelly’s New York cases, saying it was “impossible” to continue representing the “Ignition” star. However, multiple sources say that the singer fired them from that case. Greenberg and Leonard also accused the other attorneys on Kelly’s legal team, Tom Farinella and Nicole Becker, of wanting more prominent roles on the trial despite having limited federal court experience.
In September, Kelly was convicted of sex crimes and racketeering in the New York case and is currently awaiting sentencing. In Chicago, he is facing charges stemming from recording himself having sex with underage girls and intimidating witnesses to keep quiet.
The outcome of Friday’s motion has not yet been made public.
