A prominent South Carolina senator is among those killed in Wednesday’s mass shooting at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, according to multiple reports.Â
Clementa Pinckney, 41, who also served as the pastor of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, was reportedly among the nine people killed when a gunman opened fire during a prayer meeting at the historic Emanuel AME Church.Â
Police have not yet identified the victims.Â
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families & members of the Emmanuel AME community,” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilsonwrote on Twitter. “Sen. Clementa Pickney will be deeply missed.”Â
“Tonight we stand in prayer for Pastor Pinckney and his congregation, and the families who are enduring unimaginable pain at their loss,” Tweeted Senator Tim Scott, of South Carolina.Â
South Carolina governor Nikki Haley took to Facebook, writing: “While we do not yet know all of the details, we do know that we’ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter one of our places of worship and take the life of another. Please join us in lifting up the victims and their families with our love and prayers.”Â
So far it’s been reported that the gunman, 21 year old Dylann Storm Roof, has been captured.
