The founder of the dating service site “Sugar Daddy” was arrested in Malaysia for alleged prostitution and then was rearrested hours later after he was accused of raping a “sugar baby.”
According to the New York Post, authorities arrested the 34-year-old on Wednesday but did not mention his name. The day before his service, Sugarbook was barred from operating on Malaysia’s internet networks.
Although he was not named, it’s widely believed that the individual involved is Darren Chan. The name also matches the social media profile, which lists his name as the Sugarbook founder and CEO.
When he was originally arrested, it was because of allegations of prostitution on the site. The site is transparent on its mission– to match university students with “fully loaded” rich men.
Chan was later released after his hearing at Shah Alam Court on Thursday. But hours later, authorities picked him up on allegations that he had raped a woman in February 2019.
Police have since received “74 police reports nationwide in connection with this case,” Selangor’s Senior Assistant Commander Datuk Fadzil Ahmat told the Star.
Before his arrest, Chan tweeted about Malaysia banning the service and site.
“Although we do not have any form of nudity, adult content nor prostitution, we’ve lost the battle,” he wrote in a statement. “We believe that our Malaysian government knows what’s best for the people.”
Chan will return to court on Friday.
