On Monday in Brooklyn federal court, Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat entered a plea of not guilty to criminal charges that allege he helped orchestrate bets on his performance. He faces two counts—conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, stemming from a broad federal investigation into illegal sports betting.
According to ESPN, prosecutors claim that during a March 2023 game when Rozier was with the Charlotte Hornets, he informed co‑conspirators he would exit early due to a foot injury. That tipping allowed bettors to place “under” wagers on his statistical totals. At the hearing, Rozier was released on a $3 million bond secured by his Florida home and placed under conditions including a travel limitation to Florida, Ohio and New York, surrendering his passport, no gambling and no contact with co‑defendants.
According to his lawyer, Rozier “is not a gambler” and “looks forward to winning this fight.” The case arrives amid one of the largest betting‑integrity investigations ever seen in the NBA. More than 30 defendants, including other current and former players and coaches, have been named.
At this stage, Rozier remains under league and federal scrutiny. His not‑guilty plea sets the stage for what is expected to be a protracted legal process. The NBA emphasizes that legal findings and organizational discipline remain separate, and the investigation underscores the expanding risks tied to the intersection of legalized sports betting and professional athletics.
