A judge in Texas clearly explained how dire the Covid-19 situation is for children in the state, saying in an interview that “in Dallas, we have zero ICU beds left for children.”
According to HuffPost, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins explained, “That means if your child’s in a car wreck, if your child has a congenital heart defect … and needs an ICU bed, or more likely if they have COVID and need an ICU bed, we don’t have one.”
“Your child will wait for another child to die,” he said directly.
Jenkins’ comments came amid his legal battle over masks mandates with the Governor of Texas Greg Abbott. Last month, Abbott signed an executive order declaring that local governments could not implement mandates for mask-wearing.
In a successful bid, Jenkins challenged the order and issued his own that requires masks to be worn in schools and certain businesses in the county.
Abbott appealed the ruling, but the 5th Court of Appeals in Dallas upheld Jenkins’ order, and now Abbott has filed an appeal with the Texas Supreme Court.
