A Texas man says he kept his son’s remains in his kitchen for four years.
At around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, police officers showed up at the home of David McMichael in New Boston, a suburb of Texarkana, to perform a welfare check on McMichael’s son, Jason. Fox 4 News reports there are no details on who requested the welfare check.
When police entered the home, they found what they believed may be Jason’s skeletal remains. After their discovery, police arrested McMichael, 67, at the scene. McMichael shared with authorities that his son died in 2018, and he stored his body in his kitchen.
Fox 4 News reports an autopsy has been ordered.
“The body was released to Mid-South Transport and taken to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for Autopsy and further identification,” the police department said in a news release.
Police have since arrested McMichael and he’s been charged with abuse of a corpse without legal authority and is being held in the Bowie County jail, the news outlet reports.
