R&B hitmaker The Dream is taking a stand in court, pushing back against the sexual assault allegations brought against him by his former protégée, Chanaaz Mangroe. The singer-songwriter, known for his chart-topping hits, has officially filed documents aiming to have the lawsuit dismissed, calling the accusations baseless.
In the court filings, The Dream’s attorney, Desirée F. Moore, argued that the lawsuit is flawed, labeling it a “shotgun pleading” that lacks specific details against the singer. This is a key reason The Dream is requesting the case be thrown out entirely.
Moreover, The Dream wants his record label, Contra Paris, LLC, to be removed from the lawsuit, citing a lack of personal jurisdiction in California. The legal response also criticizes the complaint for allegedly using “destructive” and “racial stereotypes” against The Dream, further complicating the matter.
“Before the complaint raises a single relevant allegation, Plaintiff dedicates several pages to irrelevant gossip designed to harm Diamant’s children and impugn his marital history; unsubstantiated allegations of past violence (none of which resulted in any proceedings or findings against Diamant); false depictions of an absent father; and racist insinuations that Diamant is affiliated with a street gang,” the filing states.
The Dream’s legal team is also attempting to dismiss the rape allegations, arguing that under California law, rape cannot be pursued as a separate civil cause of action.
Moore highlighted the issues with the lawsuit in a statement, saying, “Plaintiff’s complaint contains dozens of allegations that are utterly irrelevant to her sexual battery and sex trafficking claims and are, instead, designed solely to smear Diamant’s name and reputation. Absent any facts alleging plaintiff’s involvement in a ‘commercial sex act,’ her cause of action for sex trafficking against Diamant must be dismissed.”
For those unfamiliar, this legal battle began in June when Chanaaz Mangroe, The Dream’s former protégée, filed a lawsuit against him. Mangroe alleges that The Dream lured her into a recording contract with promises of collaborations with stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé, only to later use her for his own desires, which she claims involved violent sexual acts and psychological abuse.
