According to The Hollywood Reporter, USA has canceled scripted series, ‘The Purge.’ The cancelation is reportedly due to a “shift in strategy” for the cable network owned by NBCUniversal.
The drama was an in-house show from Universal Content Productions and was based on the Universal Pictures franchise. Even after a streaming deal with Amazon, the series couldn’t attract a big enough audience and was fairly pricey to make. ‘The Purge’ was canceled after its second season.
The Purge, during its second season, averaged 562,000 viewers, which barely makes up half of the audience for its premiere season in 2018. USA, along with other networks, is moving away from scripted series due to an increase in people canceling cable.
USA’s current roster of scripted series includes Queen of the South, Briarpatch, and the anthology The Sinner. Queen of the South has been renewed for a fifth season while the other two are waiting for a final answer on their fate.
The Purge series was executively produced by franchise creator James DeMonaco, Thomas Kelly, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, and Sebastien K. Lemercier.
