1.5 Tons of Meth Seized By Mexican Military Along Northern Border

The Mexican military confirmed they seized nearly 1.5 tons of methamphetamine that was en route to the U.S. border.

The seizure took place at a checkpoint in the northern state of Sonora, which is bordered by both New Mexico and Arizona. The country’s Defense Department said they searched thanks to a tip about a truck transporting illegal substances to the border town of Tijuana, Complex reported.

Officials also say the truck was carrying powdered fruit juice concentrates and 46 drums that allegedly contained more than 800,000 fentanyl pills, the Associated Press reported.

It remains .unclear who gave the tip authorities but the outlet noted that it’s not uncommon for Mexican drug cartels to provide information about their rivals’ drug shipments. 

News of the seizure comes just weeks after Mexican policeman another large bust, the confiscation of fentanyl at a value of around $230 million.

The“historic” raid was conducted at a warehouse in Culiacan, where law enforcement discovered up to 1,200 pounds of the synthetic drug. Ten men were arrested in the raid.

“This is the largest seizure in the history of this lethal drug,” Assistant Public Safety Secretary Ricardo Mejia said at the time.

“A decade ago, we didn’t even know about fentanyl, and now it’s a national crisis,” U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman stated. “The amount of fentanyl we are seizing at the border is staggering. The number of fentanyl seizures and fentanyl-related deaths in our district are unprecedented.”
