Donald Trump went off on a group of Democratic lawmakers Thursday after they told U.S. military members they could refuse illegal orders. He called them traitors and said their actions could be punishable by death.
The backlash started after six Democratic members of Congress, all veterans or former intelligence officers, released a video reminding troops that they’re allowed under U.S. law to refuse unlawful commands. Trump reposted the video with a message saying “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” He followed that up by asking, “LOCK THEM UP???”
The lawmakers, including Senators Elissa Slotkin and Mark Kelly, and Representatives Jason Crow, Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, and Chrissy Houlahan, did not name Trump or reference any specific case. But in the video, they said things like “Our laws are clear: You can refuse illegal orders,” and “Don’t give up the ship.”
Trump’s reaction sparked alarm among top Democrats in Congress. Some said his posts could incite violence. Capitol Police were contacted to make sure the lawmakers were safe. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s language “a match soaked with gasoline.”
At a press briefing, the White House denied that Trump wanted to execute anyone, but stood by his criticism of the lawmakers. Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham said the Democrats should be clearer about what illegal orders they meant.
Trump has previously backed violent chants against his political rivals, including defending supporters who called for hanging Vice President Mike Pence during the January 6 riot. Critics say this is part of a growing pattern of Trump using threats to intimidate opponents.
