Of all the resignations that have come in since the Capitol’s siege on Wednesday, the one most anticipated is President Donald Trump’s.
Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi spoke with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes on Sunday, and to simply put it, she said, Trump has two options — resign or get impeached.
“Nothing is off the table,” she told Stahl. “He has done something so serious that there should be a prosecution against him.”
According to Pelosi, Trump, who she described as “deranged, unhinged and dangerous,” faces pressures from both the GOP and NDC to step down.
If he does not, the House already has plans to “move forward with articles of impeachment.”
One of the motivations for impeachment has to do with eliminating Trump from running for office in 2024. The impeachment “gets rid of him, he’s out of the office,” she said.
Pelosi adds that there is a chance of Trump pardoning himself. But, he can only pardon himself from federal offenses. Pelosi explains that “he cannot pardon himself form state offenses and that’s where he is being investigated, in the state of New York,”
According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Trump’s second impeachment trial could begin Jan. 19 — “unless all 100 senators agree to act on received articles of impeachment beforehand,” The Washington Post reported.
