After a video of Chicago Police Department footage was leaked online, the fatal shooting of Brittany Hill began circulating on social media over the weekend.
According to CBS Chicago, the video is from a city camera in the area of Division and Mason that captured the entire incident on May 28.
The graphic video shows that as Hill was holding her one-year-old daughter in a West Chicago neighborhood, a silver Chevy Impala pulled up next to her and shot her at point-blank range. In an effort to protect her child, Hill ran behind a car and used her body to shield her daughter.
Unfortunately, Hill was pronounced dead at the West Suburban Hospital, less than an hour after the shooting.
Although Hill was unarmed, police Spokesperson Michelle Tannehill believes that the shooting was not random. Further investigation leads detectives to believe that the 24-year-old was targeted due to gang conflicts.
While Michael Washington, 39 and Eric Adams, 23 have been arrested in connection to Hill’s death, the leaked video footage could lead to complications in the prosecution’s case. CBS Chicago reports that the video could lead to the relocation of the case because of potential bias in the jury.
In an official statement on Twitter, the Chicago Police Department expressed that the video was an “unauthorized release,” and they are searching for the person responsible.
“We have notified the state’s attorney’s office and opened an investigation to determine who electronically accessed the video and whether anything was released or compromised.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to CBS, Hill’s family is aware of the video but has yet to comment.
