#SteveKerr is a man of great accomplishments. He is one of the few coaches that actually has a ring as a player and coach (in fact , he has a total of six rings, five as a player and one as a coach), he took his team to the championship in his first year as head coach and brought them back to the finals his second year. He is the only coach with most regular-seasons wins as a player and coach (1995-96 Bulls | 2014-15 Warriors). As storied as his legacy is, Kerr’s best honor can’t be statistically quantified. It is his determination for change and his grit to fight for it that takes the crown. In 1984, Kerr’s father, Malcolm, was gunned down by two men. Nothing can amount to the tragedy of a son losing his hero. In an effort to ensure that others wouldn’t have to experience his sorrow, Kerr has avidly fought for #guncontrol.
On a recent podcast with Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury, the accomplished coach spoke basketball, particularly his recent loss in Game 7 of the finals. At the end of the conversation, he asked if he could speak his mind about gun control. “When 90 percent of our country wants background checks on gun purchases and we’ve got our senate and our house not only voting it down but using the Bill of Rights as a reason for people to have rights to carry these automatic weapons, and we’re getting people murdered every day at an alarming rate”, he stated.
Reiterating that he had to get this off his chest, Kerr continued,” You wonder if any of these Senators and Congressmen and women who are so opposed to even holding a vote on not only the right to buy an automatic weapon but just the background checks and the lists and all the stuff, how would they feel about this if their own child, their own mother, their own father, sister, brother, wife, husband was murdered. Mass murdered. Would that change your mind? I don’t know but how many times do we have to go through this before our government actually does something about it?”
Kerr’s honesty was pure and organic. Gun control isn’t a hot-button issue for political gain to him. It is a true concern and passion of his-one that he has been fighting for some time now.
