Young Thug and Gunna

Yesterday, rapper Young Thug sat down with the “Perspektives with Bank” podcast on The Big Facts Network for an interview to address the infamous 2022 YSL RICO case and the speculation surrounding rapper Gunna’s sentence.

During the interview, Thug, real name Jeffrey Lamar Williams, claimed he could sense early on that his alleged YSL partner Gunna, real name Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, was going to testify against him. He recalled watching Gunna during the initial Zoom court hearings and noticing his sorrowful appearance, which raised questions about his cooperation with the authorities.

These comments resurfaced a long-standing debate about Gunna’s 2022 plea deal, which Baller Alert has revisited. According to Fulton County court documents, Gunna accepted an Alford plea, a legal agreement where a defendant maintains innocence but admits that pleading guilty is in their best interests, usually due to piling evidence.

For many observers, the plea raised questions about whether cooperation with the state was part of the deal. However, much of Gunna’s legal team’s effort was focused on distancing him from being identified as an active member of YSL by trying to prevent prosecutors from using the rapper’s lyrics as evidence of gang involvement.

Court proceedings show that Gunna attempted to absolve evidence against him through a motion in limine, a request to exclude evidence before it was presented to a jury. This motion was later denied.

After his denial, Gunna soon accepted the Alford plea, claiming innocence while acknowledging that pleading guilty was the most practical way to resolve his case.

Despite the rumors, Gunna consistently denied cooperating with prosecutors or testifying against Thug or anyone in the case. In a public statement released in 2022, he clarified: “I want to make it perfectly clear that I have not made any statements, have not been interviewed, have not cooperated, have not agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely no intention of being involved in the trial process in any way.”
