With a new judge over Young Thug’s trial, his attorneys are already working hard to revisit bond talks.
On Tuesday, lawyer Brian Steel filed a motion for Thug to be released on house arrest. The “Ski” rapper has been in jail for two years and has been denied bond multiple times. In the documents, Steel addressed the four Ayala factors, which judges use to determine whether or not a bond can be granted. Judges consider whether or not the defendant is a flight risk, a danger to the community, a possible re-offender, or a potential risk to witnesses in the case. According to the motion for bond, Thug is none of these things.

Thug’s attorney believes he is not considered a flight risk, primarily due to his six children and other family being in Atlanta, which he has been away from for the duration of the case. They also pointed out that he has never missed a court appearance in an effort to establish good faith that he will not flee. Additionally, attorneys pointed out that the 32-year-old is not a threat to his community and plans to prove so by having law enforcement monitor his residence to confirm he remains inside in home confinement. Thug and his team have also agreed to have all visitors pre-approved by a judge.
Judge Paige Whitaker has not yet made a final decision regarding the bond, but since taking over just days ago, she has already established some ground rules for the trial moving forward. Whitaker has called on the attorneys to cut down on the defendant’s wardrobe, as the frequent influx of clothing has been difficult for bailiffs to keep up with. Furthermore, she has warned both the prosecution and the defense to maintain respect in the courtroom following several tense confrontations. Whitakers took over after Judge Glanville was recused from the case following a secret meeting in his chambers with star witness Kenneth Copeland, aka Lil Woody, and the prosecutors.
