While he’s previously landed spots in “Narcos: Mexico and Atlanta,” his upcoming project, “Takeover,” places him front and center as a leading man. The high-stakes action thriller is scheduled to crash into theaters nationwide on May 8.
The film centers on Guy Miller (Quavo), a former street racing icon trying to walk the straight and narrow after being released on parole. His plans for a quiet life are shattered when he’s forced to become the primary guardian for his brother’s children following a tragic robbery. Faced with the pressure of providing for his new family, Miller finds himself pulled back into the dangerous world of illegal street meets.
His return to the streets catches the attention of Gamal Akopyan, played by “Titanic” veteran Billy Zane. Akopyan is the mastermind behind an international heist ring that uses “takeovers,” mass gatherings where motorists block off city streets, as a smokescreen for high-value diamond robberies. He attempts to blackmail Miller into using his legendary driving skills for one final job, leaving the rapper’s character in a desperate race to survive.
Visually, the movie stands out with a stylized, comic-book aesthetic. By blending live action footage with animation, the director creates a “graphic novel” feel that captures the raw energy of Atlanta’s underground racing scene.
Perhaps the most important part of the release is the inclusion of the late Takeoff. This film serves as the final time fans will get to see the duo together on the big screen.
Their shared appearance adds an emotional layer to the high-speed drama, making the May 8 debut a must-watch for the hip-hop community.
