Lifetime is turning its attention to R. Kelly. On Monday (May 7), the network announced it is developing a documentary series and a feature film centered on allegations of sexual misconduct against the singer that have surfaced over the past decade.
Executive producer dream hampton said in a statement that the docuseries will be “a captivating investigation” into Kelly, and that survivors and people from his inner circle are coming forward with new allegations. Kelly has long denied wrongdoing.
According to Billboard, the projects are part of the relaunch of Lifetime’s Violence Against Women public affairs campaign, which will feature programming about abusive behavior. The network said it will partner with advocacy groups to give women a platform.
The announcement comes as Women of Color of the Time’s Up movement joined the #MuteRKelly campaign, calling on corporations to cut ties with the 51 year old singer, who has been accused of running a so called sex cult. In 2008, Kelly was acquitted on child pornography charges. No release dates have been announced.
