Wound care gel RevitaDerm has been recalled due to bacterial contamination.
The recall was initiated after Blaine Labs found that a bottle of RevitaDerm had Bacillus cereus, a germ that can cause “life-threatening, invasive infections.”
So far, there have been no recorded adverse events since the recall.
The skin antimicrobial RevitaDerm comes in 1-ounce bottles and 3-ounce tubes. The recall only affects items from lot BL 2844, which has an expiration date of February 19, 2023.
Even though RevitaDerm products are available in pharmacies and online, the wound-care item recalled is exclusive to doctors and cannot be purchased at stores. It was distributed to 61 physician clinics in 17 states.
According to the recall notice’s risk statement, “Patients who apply the contaminated product to a wound could develop a skin and soft tissue infection which could lead to serious complications.”
The bacteria can cause “life-threatening, invasive infections, including wound and blood infections, sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis” in immunocompromised people and preterm babies.
The company urges anyone who has the recalled RevitaDerm product to return it immediately.
