The Rihanna shooting case just entered a new phase, but the court update is only part of the story. This week, a Los Angeles judge ordered psychiatric evaluations for Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, the Florida woman accused of opening fire on Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Los Angeles property while their children and family members were reportedly inside. The criminal proceedings are now paused while the court determines whether Ortiz is mentally competent to stand trial.
But to understand why the case has exploded into one of the most disturbing celebrity crime stories of the year, you have to look at the entire paper trail. The court filings. The police reports. The public statements. The timeline itself.
Because the allegations did not begin with the gunfire. And according to investigators, the warning signs may have been sitting in public view long before shots were ever fired.
The Courtroom Shift
On May 19, Judge Shannon K. Cooley ordered mental health evaluations for Ortiz and transferred the matter to a Hollywood mental health court after Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman raised concerns about his client’s competency.
Dillman told the court, “It is the ethical obligation of counsel and the court to ensure that Ms. Ortiz’s rights are protected, including being able to assist counsel in conducting a defense in a rational manner.”
The decision marked a dramatic reversal from just days earlier. On May 13, the same judge declined to pause the proceedings after Dillman initially questioned Ortiz’s competency. At that time, the court found there was insufficient evidence to suspend the criminal case. Ortiz herself reportedly objected to delaying the proceedings and pushed for the case to continue toward trial, according to the LA Times.
Now everything is on hold.
If Ortiz is ultimately found incompetent to stand trial, California law allows for defendants to be transferred to a state hospital until competency is restored. Ortiz remains jailed on nearly $2 million bail. Her next hearing is scheduled for June 2. (apnews.com)
The Shooting That Shook Beverly Hills
The criminal allegations themselves are staggering.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting happened March 8 around 1:20 p.m. Prosecutors allege Ortiz drove to Rihanna’s Heather Road property and fired multiple rounds from a semiautomatic weapon toward the home while people were present inside.
Authorities say Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, their children, Rihanna’s mother, and staff members were all on the property at the time. No injuries were reported, but investigators say bullets struck an Airstream trailer on the property and hit an exterior nursery wall where the couple’s children were allegedly inside with a nanny.
Investigators allege Ortiz fired at least 20 rounds using an AR-15-style rifle before fleeing the scene. She was later arrested in Sherman Oaks.
According to prosecutors, officers recovered a rifle, ammunition, and a disguise from the vehicle Ortiz was driving.
After her arrest, Ortiz reportedly told investigators, “I wasn’t attempting murder.”
The Digital Trail Investigators Started Examining
Then came the online investigation.
Fox 11 reported detectives began reviewing social media activity tied to Ortiz after the shooting. According to the outlet, investigators were looking at posts allegedly referencing Rihanna, Cardi B, Kim Kardashian, and other celebrities. (foxla.com)
Authorities have not charged Ortiz with stalking, and investigators have not publicly confirmed any prior relationship between Ortiz and Rihanna.
But prosecutors and investigators have increasingly focused attention on behavior leading up to the shooting.
And one detail quickly caught attention.
The Billie Eilish Filing
Court records reviewed by Fox 11 showed that a woman identified as Ivanna Ortiz filed an emergency petition tied to a Billie Eilish concert in Florida in October 2025.
The station noted it could not independently confirm whether that filing involved the same Ivanna Ortiz charged in Los Angeles.
Still, the filing became part of the growing public scrutiny surrounding Ortiz’s history and online activity.
The Charges Keep Piling Up
Ortiz now faces attempted murder charges along with multiple felony firearm counts.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, she has been charged with:
• 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm
• 3 counts of shooting at an occupied dwelling or vehicle
• Attempted murder
If convicted on all counts, Ortiz could face life in prison. Prosecutors stress the charges remain allegations and Ortiz is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. (da.lacounty.gov)

The Pattern Raising Questions
Right now, prosecutors have not publicly alleged a stalking case.
There is no confirmed motive.
There is no publicly established relationship between Ortiz and Rihanna.
But investigators are clearly examining the path leading up to the shooting, including online activity, prior filings, and behavior before March 8.
And the courtroom shift this week changed the trajectory of the entire case.
Because now the first major legal battle is no longer just about what happened outside Rihanna’s home.
It is whether the woman accused of pulling the trigger is mentally competent enough to face trial for it.
