Four children were hospitalized after a deadly roller coaster incident at Six Flags Over Georgia claimed the life of Atlanta educator Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem. While much of the attention has focused on the 42-year-old father’s devastating death, new information confirms that four young passengers were also injured during the October 12 tragedy.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Cobb County Police Department confirmed Wednesday, October 14, that all four injured passengers were minors. The children were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment, with authorities describing their injuries as not life-threatening.

However, several important questions remain unanswered about the Six Flags accident, particularly concerning the children who survived.

Police have not revealed their exact ages, the injuries they suffered, or whether they have been released from the hospital. Officials also have not identified the children, citing their status as minors. No verified medical information has established whether they suffered broken bones, head injuries, or other physical trauma.

The lack of specific information means the full extent of what these children experienced remains unknown. Although authorities have indicated their injuries were not expected to be fatal, that classification does not establish how serious their individual injuries were or what recovery might involve. No public information has confirmed whether any of the children will require additional medical care.

According to the Associated Press, Kariem was thrown from his seat on the Goliath roller coaster and struck other passengers before falling beneath the attraction. Police confirmed that four minors were injured in the incident, although investigators have not publicly explained the precise circumstances of each child’s injuries.

Emergency responders arrived at Six Flags Over Georgia shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of the incident. Officers found Kariem unresponsive beneath the attraction, and he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses described watching the unimaginable unfold as the roller coaster approached the final portion of its track.

In reporting from CBS News Atlanta, park visitor Nick Mendenhall said he watched Kariem rise from his seat before falling forward and eventually leaving the moving ride. Other witnesses described confusion and distress as passengers returned to the loading area.

The Six Flags accident has left investigators examining how a ride designed to carry passengers at high speeds could become the scene of a fatal fall and injuries involving several children.

Goliath, which opened in 2006, reaches approximately 200 feet in height and travels at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, according to the Associated Press. The attraction has remained closed since the incident.

Beyond the investigation, Kariem’s loved ones are grieving a man they say meant far more to his community than the circumstances of his death.

In an emotional interview with FOX 5 Atlanta, his cousin Geo Ashe described the pain of losing someone who brought so much happiness to their family.

“He was the sunshine of our family,” Ashe said.

Relatives explained that Six Flags held a special place in Kariem’s childhood. Growing up in Atlanta, he regularly visited the amusement park with family members, including his grandmother. Those trips became cherished family traditions, making the circumstances of his final visit even more heartbreaking.

His family remembered him as a devoted educator, a loving father figure, and someone who enjoyed bringing relatives together. Ashe recalled Kariem preparing large pans of lasagna for family gatherings, describing the meals as part of the memories his loved ones will now hold close.

Family members also told FOX 5 that Kariem had survived lymphoma twice.

His life had included another frightening experience just weeks before his death. Family friend Elicia Day said Kariem and his daughter survived a car fire shortly before the Six Flags tragedy. Day also described his previous battles with cancer and COVID-19.

At Wesley International Academy, where Kariem worked in technology education and information technology, his death has devastated colleagues and students.

According to 95.5 WSB Radio, the school’s executive director, Jason Marshall, said Kariem spent more than a decade serving the school community and connected with nearly all of its approximately 800 students through his work.

Marshall remembered him as someone who consistently stepped up to help, whether a task fell within his official responsibilities or not. The school plans to provide additional support for students when classes resume following fall break.

As the Six Flags accident continues to generate national attention, Kariem’s relatives have also expressed concern about graphic footage of his final moments circulating online.

The family has asked social media users, content creators, and news outlets to stop sharing images and videos showing his death. They want the public to remember the person he was instead of reducing his life to disturbing footage.

In a separate statement reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, relatives also warned that they have not authorized any crowdfunding campaigns or donation requests in Kariem’s name. They urged the public to avoid contributing to accounts claiming to collect money for the family.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner and Cobb County investigators are working to determine what caused Kariem to be ejected. Officials are reviewing the ride’s safety systems, mechanical components, and operating conditions, with no final cause publicly established.

Six Flags has temporarily closed nine additional roller coasters across North America as a precaution, according to the Associated Press.

In a statement reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Six Flags Over Georgia Park President Richard Pretlow acknowledged the tragedy and those affected. The park plans to reopen Friday, October 16, but Goliath will remain closed without a confirmed reopening date.

For the four children who were hospitalized, the unanswered questions remain especially significant. Authorities have confirmed they survived, but the public still does not know the nature of their injuries or how their recoveries are progressing.

As Kariem’s family mourns a beloved educator and father figure, the investigation must also account for the four young passengers whose lives were directly affected by the same devastating Six Flags accident.
