Steve Madden shoes are pulling directly from the luxury runway this season, and the resemblance is not subtle. Five styles in the brand’s current lineup line up almost detail for detail with shoes from Christian Louboutin, Maison Margiela, Isabel Marant, Manolo Blahnik and Bottega Veneta. None of them are collaborations. All of them cost a fraction of what the originals go for.
Start with the Larina. It is a black satin square-toe stiletto with a small bow at the toe and long ribbons that wrap and tie around the ankle. That is the Christian Louboutin Cassia Lace Up, more or less feature for feature. Louboutin built the Cassia around a ballet slipper, sitting a square toe and a grosgrain bow on top of a 100mm heel with a satin ribbon ankle tie. The Larina comes in black, red, ivory and pink satin. The Cassia comes in black, blush and a red Louboutin calls Loubi. If you have been on balletcore since the trend started, this is the one that closes the gap the hardest.
The Calico is the boldest of the group, and Steve Madden is not even being coy about it. The brand’s own product page describes it as a tabi split-toe ballet flat. Tabi is Maison Margiela’s most recognizable silhouette, a cloven toe design the house has been running since 1988, and it is the shoe fashion people either love or refuse to acknowledge. The Calico gives you the same split toe in black leather with a flat sole and a slip-on fit. Margiela is not going to love it. Your bank account will.
For the sneaker side, the Mavis brings back the hidden wedge. Brown suede, padded ankle, multiple straps, and a wedge tucked inside the sole so you get height without looking like you are wearing a heel. Isabel Marant made that silhouette a phenomenon with the Bekett, which stayed sold out for years and turned into the shoe every street style photographer chased. The wedge sneaker moment is circling back, and the Mavis is positioned right at the front of it.
The Morals boot is the one with real history behind it. Wheat colored nubuck, hiking style eyelets, rugged laces and a stiletto heel. That is the Manolo Blahnik Oklamod, released in 2002, and it is arguably the most culturally loaded shoe on this list. Manolo took the Timberland construction and put it on a heel, and the shoe took off the second it hit the culture. Jennifer Lopez wore them in “Jenny from the Block” and “All I Have.” Beyoncé wore them in the “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” video. Jay Z name checked Manolo Blahnik and Timbs in the same breath on that record. Kim Kardashian has been photographed in them decades later. Original pairs are still being resold for several hundred dollars in used condition because Manolo has never brought them back at scale. The Morals is the closest thing to that boot you can buy new right now.
Then there is the Pager. Metallic silver overlays, open mesh panels, low profile runner shape. Bottega Veneta’s Orbit sneaker works off the same design language, all futuristic paneling and shine on a slim sole. Metallic sneakers are having a real moment and the Pager is a comfortable way to try it before committing to a Bottega price tag.
None of this is an accident, and it is not new either. Steve Madden built a business on reading the runway fast and getting a version to market while the trend is still climbing. The brand has caught heat for it over the years and has been taken to court over design similarity more than once. What is different now is how open the marketing is. When your own product description says tabi, you are not hiding the reference. You are counting on the shopper recognizing it.
The trade off is real and it is worth being honest about. These are not the same shoes. The materials are not the same, the construction is not the same, and they are not going to last the way a Manolo lasts. Reviews on the Calico mention that the split-toe divider can be rough and the sole is thin on cushioning. Nobody buying a $100 shoe is expecting a $1,200 shoe. What you are buying is the silhouette, the look in a photo, the ability to wear the trend while it is actually a trend instead of two seasons after you saved up for it.
That is the calculation. A luxury shoe is an investment piece you keep for years. A trend shoe you wear for one season and move on from. Knowing which one you are shopping for is the whole game, and the shoes above are firmly in the second category, which is exactly the point.
