Eight years after the untimely death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, a street in Miami-Dade county will bear his name.

The 0.3 mile stretch of road in front of Martin’s former high school will soon be known as Trayvon Martin Avenue.

According to CNN, the resolution was approved by Miami-Dade County commissioners last week. It comes amid continued protests against police brutality and racial injustice, and renewed interest in the Black Lives Matter Movement.

“Trayvon Martin was a typical teenager who enjoyed playing video games, listening to music, watching movies and talking and texting on the phone,” the resolution read, adding that the teen “was also developing advanced mechanical skills and, among other things, was known to be able to build and fix dirt bikes…Martin intended to stay close to home and attend college at either the University of Miami or Florida A&M University.”

Martin was killed on February 26, 2012, while walking home with an Arizona bottle and skittles. His murderer, George Zimmerman, was notably acquitted for his murder, which in turn, along with Martin’s death, sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.

Now, a portion of NE 16th ave from Ives Dairy Road to NE 209th Street will be renamed in his honor.
