Terrell Owens got emotional on Saturday night’s season premiere of OWN’s Iyanla: Fix My Life, opening up to life coach Iyanla Vanzant about his 16 year NFL career, his childhood and his desire to be a better father.
Vanzant traveled to Owens’ hometown of Alexander City, Alabama, to work with the former All Pro receiver, who has not played in the NFL since 2010 and has faced well publicized financial and personal struggles since leaving the game. OWN described him as “a man down on every single field of his life.”

Terrell Owens to His Parents: “My Heart Was Broken”
Owens’ mother, Marilyn, was 16 when she became pregnant by a married neighbor who lived across the street. Owens did not learn who his father was until he was 11, and he told Vanzant he never saw his parents come together for him. In this clip, Vanzant brings the family together to talk honestly about their feelings for the first time.
Can Terrell Owens Forgive His Father?
Owens found out the truth about his father when he became interested in the man’s daughter as a kid. His father supported him financially, but the two were never close. Vanzant sat them down face to face to confront their past, hoping it would help Owens move forward with his own children.
New episodes of Iyanla: Fix My Life air Saturdays at 9 p.m. on OWN.
