Tiger Woods walked out of a Florida courthouse Wednesday with no jail sentence, but one part of his plea agreement could follow him around golf courses for years.
According to Reuters, Woods agreed to a plea deal stemming from his March 2026 rollover crash and received a five-year suspension of his driver’s license. The Tiger Woods case ended with the 50-year-old golfer entering a no contest plea after previously pleading not guilty to the original DUI allegations. Judge Darren Steele imposed two five-year suspensions that will run at the same time.
Woods appeared at the Martin County Courthouse with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, and did not speak to reporters as he entered or left the building, according to Reuters. Steele made it clear in court that Woods cannot treat the suspension casually.
“There are no exceptions. If you were to drive for any reason at all, you would go immediately back to jail,” Steele told Woods.
The Tiger Woods case traces back to March 27, when authorities said his Land Rover was involved in a rollover crash near his Jupiter Island home. According to the Associated Press, Woods’ SUV clipped a truck before rolling onto its side. No injuries were reported. Woods told authorities that he had been looking at his phone and adjusting the radio before the crash.
The Associated Press reported that deputies found two pain pills in Woods’ pocket and said he displayed signs that raised concerns about impairment. Woods took a Breathalyzer test that showed no alcohol, but he refused to provide a urine sample, according to the AP. He initially pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge.
Prosecutors ultimately faced problems proving that Woods was impaired. State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl told Reuters that two toxicologists who reviewed the evidence determined there was insufficient proof of impairment, in part because Woods had developed what prosecutors described as a pharmacological tolerance following multiple medical procedures.
“Both toxicologists reviewing the information and evidence provided to them were of the opinion that there was insufficient proof,” Bakkedahl said. “I don’t make the facts; I accept them as they are brought to me of his impairment.”
That evidentiary issue helped reshape the Tiger Woods case. Reuters reported that the more serious DUI allegation was dropped as Woods was adjudicated guilty following his no-contest plea. The outlet reported that the court imposed the concurrent five year license suspensions in connection with reckless driving and a careless driving citation. Woods was also ordered to pay approximately $1,500 in fines.
The driving ban could create an unusual complication for one of the most recognizable golfers in history. Woods obviously has the resources to hire a driver for ordinary transportation, but getting around a golf course presents a different question.
Golf carts can be a basic part of transportation around courses, tournaments, and golf facilities, making the suspension potentially relevant to Woods’ professional life. However, Florida law makes an important distinction between an ordinary golf cart and a street-legal low-speed vehicle.
Under Florida Statute 316.212, a person who is 18 or older does not generally need a valid driver’s license simply to operate a standard golf cart on a public road where golf cart use is authorized. The person instead must possess valid government-issued photographic identification. That means the Tiger Woods suspension does not automatically prevent him from operating every ordinary golf cart in Florida.
A different rule applies when a cart qualifies as a low-speed vehicle. Under Florida Statute 316.2122, anyone operating a low-speed vehicle on an authorized roadway must possess a valid driver’s license. Those vehicles are also subject to registration, insurance, and equipment requirements that do not apply to a traditional golf cart.
That distinction means Woods could lose the ability to legally operate certain street-legal carts and low-speed vehicles during his suspension, an issue that carries unusual significance for someone whose profession keeps him around golf courses. It is not clear from the publicly reported plea terms whether Steele’s warning against driving “for any reason at all” extends beyond vehicles that legally require a driver’s license. Woods would need to comply with the specific court order as well as the law governing whichever vehicle he intends to operate.
The plea agreement comes after Woods announced that he would step away and seek treatment following the crash.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” he said in a March statement after the incident. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time.”
Steele previously allowed Woods to travel outside the United States for treatment. The judge also approved requests that gave prosecutors access to prescription and hospital records connected to the investigation.
Woods has not competed in an official event since the 2024 British Open, but his influence within professional golf remains significant. He has won 15 major championships and shares the PGA Tour record of 82 career victories with Sam Snead.
For Woods, avoiding a DUI conviction closes one major chapter of the case, but the five year suspension creates a restriction that could reach further into his golf life than the average driver would ever have to consider.
