“Thank you for this beautiful piece on me and my designs,” she wrote, leaning into the legacy she spent decades building.
The controversy sparked when Mathew appeared on the talk show “Kandid with Kendis.” While host Kendis Gibson was discussing the massive success of Destiny’s Child, he credited both parents for the effort it took to get there. Mathew quickly cut him off, asking, “What work did she put in?” The question caught many off guard, as it seemed to erase the years Tina spent hand-crafting the group’s image.
Gibson stood his ground, reminding the music mogul that Tina was responsible for the group’s styling and visual identity. At that point, Mathew conceded. “Ok, you’re absolutely right, and the styling. The imaging. You’re right,” he admitted. However, the tension was already high. When the host described the group’s rise as a “joint effort,” the interview was abruptly ended.
Mathew later told Page Six that the moment was blown out of proportion. He claimed the host arrived late and was more interested in talking about Tina than the business side of the group.
