A 24 year old driver named Doll died after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot him during a traffic stop, according to CBS Miami.
Reports say Doll and his girlfriend were in a red Nissan Altima when the car bumped the vehicle in front of it at an intersection. Trooper Misael Diaz, who was on a motorcycle, approached the car, got off, and stood in front of it with a hand on the hood. According to the report, the car then moved forward and backed up. It was later reported that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license.
Reports say the trooper ended up on the hood as the driver attempted a U-turn, and he was thrown off the car. The trooper fired through the windshield. A spokesperson said he fired because he feared for his life. Doll was struck three times, twice in the arm and once in the chest. Reports say he drove about eight blocks before losing control and hitting an SUV. He was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived. His girlfriend suffered a broken ankle and was hospitalized.
A surveillance camera at a nearby gas station reportedly captured the incident on video. As the video circulated, Doll’s family and friends responded with shock and anger, and questioned why the trooper got on the hood in the first place.
A relative of the girlfriend described the final moments to CBS Miami: “When the guy jumped on the hood with the gun, it froze her. As he was driving, I guess he told her he was going into shock. Told her he loved her, whatever, crash.”
The family has since hired an attorney.
