Donald Trump just made a major shift in immigration and education. He announced that the United States will welcome 600,000 Chinese students to study in American universities. That number more than doubles the amount already here.
Speaking during ongoing trade negotiations with Beijing, Trump said, “We are going to allow their students to come in. It is very important and we are going to get along with China.” The move represents a sharp reversal from earlier promises to cut down on Chinese student visas and to block potential security risks.
MAGA supporters are not celebrating. Many in Trump’s base see this as a direct betrayal of the “America First” message.
Conservative commentator Laura Loomer blasted the decision. She wrote, “I did not vote for more Muslims and Chinese people to be imported to my country. Please do not make America China. MAGA does not want more immigrants.”
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene joined the criticism, claiming Chinese students are taking opportunities away from Americans. She asked, “Why are we allowing 600,000 students from China to replace our American students’ opportunities?”
Universities, however, are welcoming the change. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick explained that many schools depend on international tuition to stay open. He said, “Without allowing the Chinese students, the bottom 15 percent of universities would go out of business in America.”
The decision has created a sharp divide. Supporters argue it will help improve trade talks with China and keep U.S. colleges afloat. Opponents believe it undermines the same “America First” policy that helped Trump win support from his loyal base.
For now, the plan is moving forward and the clash between Trump’s policy shift and MAGA outrage is only growing louder.
