Rep. Jamie Raskin says a routine search inside the newly opened Epstein files delivered a result he did not expect and one he says raises fresh questions about Donald Trump’s public claims.
Speaking after reviewing the unredacted Jeffrey Epstein documents at the Department of Justice, Raskin said he searched Trump’s name and saw it appear “more than a million times.” The Maryland Democrat, who serves as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said at least one document he reviewed appears to conflict with Trump’s repeated statements about his past relationship with Epstein.
That document is a 2009 email exchange between Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, in which Epstein relayed his lawyers’ account of a phone call with Trump. According to Raskin, the email describes Trump disputing claims that Epstein had been banned from Mar-a-Lago.
“Trump is paraphrased and quoted as saying, ‘No, Jeffrey Epstein was not a member of Mar-a-Lago, but he was a guest at Mar-a-Lago, and no, we never asked him to leave,’” Raskin said in an interview at the Capitol.
Trump has denied wrongdoing connected to Epstein and has said he removed Epstein from Mar-a-Lago for attempting to recruit spa workers. The files also reference testimony given to the FBI in 2019 by a former Palm Beach police chief, who said Trump claimed he expelled Epstein after his early 2000s arrest and described Maxwell as “evil.”
The Justice Department recently began allowing members of Congress to review unredacted Epstein records after criticism over redactions in the more than 3 million documents released publicly. Lawmakers can view the files on secure terminals at DOJ headquarters during business hours.
Raskin said the scale of the material makes meaningful review nearly impossible. “The idea that we could get through a meaningful fraction of them is just ridiculous,” he said, adding, “And [Trump’s] name, I think I put his name, and it appears more than a million times. So it’s all over the place.”
He argued that limiting access to a handful of computers amounts to a “coverup” and called for the unreleased documents to be made public. “If they’re duplicative, what’s the problem?” Raskin said. “We’ll be the judge of that.”
